Unlike the chicken, some birds have an ink gland that squirts some camouflage color onto the shell of eggs before they are lain. The golden plover

What's the difference between a ptarmigan and a grouse? I saw several of them in the mountains last year, but I wasn't sure which they were.

They are members of the same family of birds along with chickens. Grouse are bigger in general and do not turn white in the winter. Also, ptarmigans have feathers further down on their feet, I think. Grouse also carry their tail up when they walk and it is larger than that of a ptarmigan. During displays, the tail is used more as a signal in grouse. Also, ptarmigan males make a sound like a pig.
